As a typewriter poet, I do more than create unique, custom poems for people. I create experiences.
Whether I am writing a grief poem, a love poem, or a friendship poem, I commit myself to helping people express their sentiments in beautiful, creative ways.
I have never been one of those typewriter artists who simply asks for a topic. I love to dive deep. I love to connect. I love to see people cry with the kind of relief that only comes from reading long-needed words.
When I write healing poems or encouraging poems, I do not simply rephrase something I’ve already written. I ask what you’re trying to heal. I ask what you’re trying to hold onto. I ask what is beautiful to you so I can capture the perfect metaphor. I empty my mind and stay present with your unique situation, so I can understand what you need to say and what you need to hear.
When I write love poems, friendship poems, and family poems, I do not simply fuse together tired, old cliches. I ask people to tell me what they enjoy doing together, what their inside jokes are, which memories they treasure. I ask them about their favourite songs, foods, and hobbies. This is how I ensure that no two relationship poems are alike. They are all unique and customized exactly to the people I’m working with.
When I write at weddings, birthday parties, corporate team building weekends, or other events, I do not simply pump out random haikus. I take a breath between the people I write for, and I try to truly see and truly hear the person in front of me, so they can walk away with something not only unique, but also personal.
Here is a (by no means exhaustive) list of the types of poems I’ve written:
- poems as birthday gifts for spouses, children, parents, friends, etc.
- love poems where both people give me ingredients for a poem
- love poems where just one partner commissions the poem while the other walks away
- love poems where partners take turns commissioning a poem for the other and then read them together (so romantic!)
- grief poems as healing salve for a mourning person
- eulogy poems to be read at a funeral
- friendship poems for up to five people (but I’m eager to update this to six or more!)
- healing poems of all kinds (including self-love, encouragement, holding onto hope, coping with health issues, etc.)
- celebration poems of all kinds, especially major life transitions such as graduation poems, divorce poems, promotion poems, baby shower poems, wedding gift poems, etc.
- personal mantras made into poetry
- children thanking their parents
- parents writing future wishes for their children (I especially love these! If you want one, make sure you ask me why I love them so much.)
- Mother’s Day poems and Father’s Day poems
- of course, I’ve constructed poems out of prompts like every other typewriter poet
- business values and slogans turned into poetry
- and so much more
